Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) Partners Celebrate Achievements, Firm up Plans for New School Year PDF Print E-mail

"Let’s celebrate our peak moments and learn from them as we chart our destiny." This theme inspired by Appreciative Inquiry captures the essence of the Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) National Partners Meeting held last May 31-June 2, 2010. The annual event brought together 65 BLT partners nationwide representing universities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local government units (LGUs), corporate foundations and local Department of Education (DepEd) offices.

BLT is Jollibee Foundation’s in-school feeding program that addresses hunger among undernourished Grades 1 and 2 pupils in public schools and helps them to stay in school by keeping them fit and healthy. Daily lunch is cooked and served by organized parent groups. Alliance-building for collaboration among local education stakeholders ensures program sustainability.

The BLT National Partners Meeting highlighted the BLT accomplishments in school year 2009-2010 and enabled the partners to map their action plans for the coming school year with valuable inputs from key resource speakers.

"I learned a great deal from the sharing of my co-participants and guest speakers. The knowledge and information I derived from the Partners Meeting will help me in successfully implementing BLT in Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental," shares Ms. Nel Labrador, Community Extension Coordinator of Christ the King College, a new BLT partner institution.

For school year 2009-2010, BLT nourished 4,674 Grades 1 and 2 pupils from 135 public elementary schools located in 25 towns and cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. At the end of the 136-day feeding cycle, 8 out of 10 pupils reached their normal weight-for-age level.

In school year 2010-2011, BLT will cover close to 240 public schools and feed more than 8,000 pupils. Reaching this target necessitates the collaborative work among local education stakeholders. Dr. Nene Guevara of Synergeia Foundation encouraged BLT partners to "find kindred spirits as we build communities that make education work". Other resource speakers were 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Mr. Efren Peñaflorida and Ms. Celine Santillan of Virlanie Foundation who shared on the topic of mobilizing resources through community fundraising.

A highlight of the event was the recognition given to four BLT partners who have institutionalized BLT in their local government programs. The awardees were: for Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya -- the Local Government of Bayombong/Bayombong Local Education Alliance and St. Mary’s University; for San Isidro,  Nueva Ecija -- the Local Government of San Isidro and College of Immaculate Conception. The honorees exemplified what Jollibee Foods Corporation Chair and CEO and Jollibee Foundation Chair Mr. Tony Tan Caktiong encouraged all BLT partners to pursue in their work. "If we believe in our dream and pursue it with passion and discipline, then whatever the dream may be, we can achieve it," says Mr. Tan Caktiong in his message of thanks to all BLT partners.
